OBR Day | February 10, 2019

As part of the One Billion Rising campaign, over 40 Delhi based organisations working on issues of gender justice will come together on February 10 to rise against violence against women and girls. They will celebrate their solidarity through a public event filled with music, dance, theatre and poetry at Central Park, Connaught Place. The event will start at 1 PM and will end at 7:30 PM.

One Billion Rising is a global campaign calling for an end to violence against women and girls. The campaign started in 2013 and has spread to 207 countries. The campaign celebrates the Power of Love in ending violence. This year the campaign’s theme is to question the ways in which systemic violence and discrimination have become an inextricable thread of our lives.

In Delhi, campaign partners include Azad Foundation, ActionAid, CEQUIN, Jagori, CHSJ, Breakthrough, YP Foundation, CFAR, Plan India, Srijanatmak Manushi Sanstha, Mittika, Womenite among others. Several colleges of Delhi University like Miranda, LSR, Shivaji College, Janaki Devi Memorial College are also OBR partners.

Through diverse performances the colleges and organisations will engage the audience on different issues like culture of violence, LGBTQ identity, child rights, women’s agency and independence, toxic masculinity among others. Kamla Bhasin, coordinator of OBR campaign in South Asia, will also speak on these issues. The event will also include a musical performance by veteran singer Vidya Shah, a popular performer and prolific composer who has performed globally. Sumangala Damodaran, a professor at Ambedkar University who is known for her work on archiving songs of protest will also perform some popular songs from people’s movements.
